Euthanasia HIGH RISK:

Sponge Bob   ---   Lou Ann  ---   Smiley

HIGH RISK for euthanasia

Spongebob - a big overgrown puppy, is on the list for euthanasia this week.  He is 1-2 years old, heartworm negative, and has gotten along well with numerous kennel mates.  The stress and crowding of the shelter has taken its toll on him however, and he has become grumpy at mealtime - preferring to eat away from the other dogs in his kennel.  Due to the crowding of the shelter, this is not possible, and this beautiful boy will be euthanized this week or next.  Spongebob has shown no cat aggression, preferring instead to keep well out of their reach!  (the big chicken!  :-) )  He is 42 lbs and is the perfect size for a family dog - his life has barely begun - he has such joy in his walk - please help him to find a rescue and his forever family!  Contact Lynette @ raindoggies@live.com (july 24, 2010).

Sponge Bob

Having hung out in the front kennel with 3 of my closest "friends," I have gained the reputation as an unflappable fellow who takes the meaning of pack dog to that next level. Meeting and greeting new people and other dogs is a huge source of delight for me. With just the perfect mixture of puppy playfulness and controlled medium energy, there's a lot to love about me. I hear brindle is the next fashion rage (LOL) so don't miss out on a chance to have a cutting edge dog such as

Count on big smiles and a waggy tail when you meet this lo-key black and tan sweetheart. Good with other dogs, LouAnne quietly goes about her business and is fast to make you her best friend. Good on a leash, this smaller framed girl is easy to love on and rewards you back tenfold.

Smiley   URGENT

Smiley does a fabulous job at letting you know he is really happy to see you and ready for a walk. Great with other dogs, Smiley loves nothing better than to head out with a canine companion and check pee-mails along his walking path. So very friendly, unflappable, and eager to please, Smiley would be great in a busy environment where he can meet and greet new friends.

Johnny   VERY URGENT

Update: The shelter staff are pushing to euth Lorenzo, Johnny , and Brent soon.  These are terrific dogs--I've spent time with all 3 of them.  Lorenzo is HW neg, the other 2 are HW positive.  Brent is good with dogs, cats, kids--a fabulous dog with tons of personality (truly a lap dog).  If my dog-aggressive dog wouldn't eat Brent, I would bring him home in a heartbeat.  He is my favorite dog at the shelter.  J ohnny is very affectionate, walks well on a leash, takes treats gently from my hand, gets along with June (his sister).  And Lorenzo is a love, too (just not good with cats).  Lorenzo and Brent have been neutered.  I will be absolutely heartbroken if these dogs are pts.  Beth

From Beth (June 30): Shelter staff are threatening to put Johnny down this week, claiming that he is dog-aggressive. I think they are gunning for him because he is a black pit bull mix. I had to beg to buy this friendly dog a couple more days to find rescue. Here's an update from a Rescue volunteer:
Johnny is not the horrible bully that the shelter staff would have us believe. I tested him with another dog today and he did circles all over the dog (Sharpei, the new matted husky) with his tail wagging all the time. He really wants to play and be in control but i don't see him getting aggressive with other dogs. One of the kennel workers said he hadn't seen any signs of dog-aggression from Johnny.
Johnny needs rescue ASAP, or he will be put down (probably this week). Can anyone please give this friendly dog a chance?
I'm solid black and have a blocky head. I have heard some whispering at the shelter that I am not an "adoptable" dog and that I will "sit" here forever til
someone comes for me. I feel my clock is ticking and ticking very fast. As sweet and friendly as I am (look how quickly I tried to climb into my
walking buddy's lap!), it may not be enough...sadly. My new human walking friend said I was a huge bundle of positive energy, huge tail wags and
kisses. Frownie face!! If you can see beyond my fur color and head shape, please speak up right away as I know I have it in me to be the
perfect pet for someone!!

His cherry eye surgery and vetting is now fully sponsored, thank you!

I have heard lots of people talking about my cherry eye, my thin frame and my back leg which just doesn’t seem right. I see sad faces and wonder why. While I will be going in to have my body tweaked and returned to its former glory, every day I still see so much which makes me smile and my tail wag. I have great kennelmates for example and so many people who have stopped by to befriend me. They know they can always count on a sweet, gentle soft-eared fellow who will do what it takes to be the perfect pet.

I'm trying. No really I am!! You see, the shelter life is just not for me. While I have a super wham-o-dine boxer roommate who I love snuggling with, all of the commotion and barking makes me very unhappy. I welcome visitors to my kennel allowing them to rub all over me and even let them carry me out to q uiet visiting areas on site. I am still not in a position to "give back" per say but ideally would like to. My life has not been easy...my fur is rough for example (poor diet) and I have dry patches of skin on my body. I have my paws crossed that I will be getting the break I am looking for and deserve... a new home.

Talk about a dime a dozen!! Everywhere I look here at the shelter, I see anther all black female who recently had a family. It's just crazy I say! I really, really want to stand out for the crowd, so I allowed the photo gal to take what I believe to be the best shot of the day. Don't you agree? Knowing I can't live off my stunning looks alone, you'll be pleased to know I am super sweet, calm, gentle, great with other dogs and could have cared less about the cats roaming around on the office porch. I love meeting new people. mingling in crowds and always have a cute smile and tail wag on reserve for everyone!

Daria won the blue ribbon for the day as the best mannered and most fabulous leash walker of the day!! Out of a field of over 40+ candidates, the competition was intense and Daria rose to the tippy top to claim the prize. Welcoming you into her kennel with front paws opened very wide, Daria is a super sweet lady who reminds you why having a canine in your life can be so rewarding. This "dream walker" maintains a perfect composure around other dogs and truly deserves a second chances at sacking out someone's master suite bed and taking a well deserved nap! Catawba

Like a "Teacher's Pet," I am the "PET" of the glamour shot girl. She kept coming by my kennel over the weekend to check in on me and to give me some love. I can't tell you how fabulous this made me feel and I can't say for sure why she chose me as her favorite. I have my hunches though. She swooned me with words like incredibly sweet and attentive, gentle, easy going, forgiving and wanting nothing more than to be near you. While I will quickly attach myself like glue to your leg, I pride myself in having great manners and getting along well with other dogs ( I tend to be on the submissive side). I will keep diligently checking my pee-mail to see when I have next job assignment as a full time pet. Let's hope that note comes in fast!

Watson found his way to us earlier this spring as a stray. After being picked up by animal control and then reclaimed by his guardians, animal control found him again and this time his family no longer wants him. So what HAS this great dog been up to in escaping his home and wandering the county?? Turns out, he heads over to the local elementary school where he scavenges around for the attention of little kids!! Easy going, friendly, good with other dogs and in the perpetual hunt for neck and all over body rubs, Watson is right in his element with kids, commotion and new environments!

Jake is a handsome young male lab boy who appears to be totally housebroken - he crosses his legs as long as he can in the kennels - waiting and hoping to get out for a much needed walk! He is a big lovebug - loving and seeking out attention from whoever is near. He wants to chase the cats, so may need some work in that arena. He seems to do well with other dogs. Jake is a happy go-lucky dog who is hoping for a long and loving life!

I really surprised my two new friends at the shelter. Having not seen me in person and initially meeting me on line, they were both so surprised at how small and compact I am. Weighing in at over 40lbs, I heard them gasp that they could not understand where I was packing away the pounds!! In any event, while some may prefer my smaller frame, I feel it's also important for folks to know who sweet, low key, patient, and friendly I am. I would describe myself as a fun girl who loves meeting other dogs and people alike. I bring with me a couple years of pet experience and know I could add just the right amount of love and fur to any home. I pack lightly so I can be ready in a flash to move on into my new home!

Carl

More recently, I have earned a bad rap with the shelter staff but I really AM a good dog!! You see, I have had several roommates but in combination with extreme heat, cramped quarters and empty food bowls lying around, I get grumpy and start picking on my canine friends. As you can see in some of my early photos, I am fully capable of happily sharing my bed with others and will eagerly engage dogs in playtime and nuzzle time. It made me upset the other day to hear people saying I was a "bad dog." I'm really not. I am friendly. I am fun. I am playful. I love heading out for walks. I love giving our kisses and sharing huge tail wags with people. I love cats way too much (code for I see these creatures as play toys!!) so please keep them to yourselves! I have a lot to offer as a pet and was at least glad that the right person was able to witness how the stress of kennel life effects my otherwise fabulous personality.

Forrest  - now fully sponsored for vetting!!

I dodged one huge bullet in being rescued by a neighbor who saw me and another dog (now rescued) tied up in a trailer park with no food or water. I arrived underweight with a totally compromised body. Despite not feeling well, I still held my head high...so very high..every day. I fell very ill shortly after my arrival and were it not for my guardian angel on the rescue team pushing the vets to do everything within reason for me, we would not be talking right now. I made a remarkable recovery and quickly landed in what I thought was my new forever home. Turns out, the other dogs in the family would not tolerate me and I was being beat up on. So...back to the shelter I go!! Over the last few days, I have been idling away my time helping out staff and volunteers take photos of new arrivals in our small fenced in area. I am so very eager to help and really want to lend a helping paw. I am so fabulous with other dogs (but as we know a bit too passive) and love to be right in the thick of things. I am always sporting a huge wagging tail and smile that I feel the other dogs are envious of how wonderful and positive I always am. I am taking applications again for the perfect home. I can assure you I will bring a minimal amount of fur to your new home and a maximum amount of unconditional love, kisses and furry hugs. After all I have been through, I just know someone will step up to the plate. Let it be you!

Lucinda is a sweet, bubbly lady who came in as an owner surrender with her best friend and buddy, Rascal. Lucinda is super on a leash and very easy going. She had a great time in the office meeting staff and the public following our walk and was a huge hit! She paid no attention to the "working" cats inside and was very much at ease in her new environment. Rascal is a well mannered, easy going fellow who came in as an owner surrender with his best friend and buddy, Lucinda. With photos like mine, I know I will be hard to resist! Adopt or rescue me, and I will tell you what I am laughing about in my pictures! But seriously, all of the wonderful things you have heard about me are really true. I am a fun, smaller sized cutie who is a gentle player, very sweet and could care less about cats. I have been told I am extremely smart as I have a very crafty way of escaping from my pen (hint: if you climb on the very tippy-top of the igloo and spring upwards......). That's enough everyone! I know it looks like I could feed a whole orphanage of puppies. While I sometimes feel as though that is my destiny, with my litter of pups heading out for rescue really soon, my role as a mom/milk producer will be coming to a screeching halt. In light of my job opportunity moving forward (ie family pet), I abandoned my "feeding" post and headed out for a walk which I must say I enjoyed tremendously! Showing off my leash walking skills and compatibility with other dogs, the fresh air and newly minted pee-mails along my path, offered me a much needed change of pace and scenery. I heard my walker commenting on how easy going, friendly and down right happy I was. Her comments made me smile as she had me pegged. I am an easy read and can tell you straight up I have what it takes to be your perfect pet. Just give me a chance.

Squint

Squint is a female husky/shepherd mix, 18-24 months old, trace HW positive. She is very sweet and loving and is dog- and bird-friendly. She is extremely underweight (weighs 48 lb. but should weigh 60 lb.).

Lorraine

Lorraine is a 1-2 year old female lab mix. She came in dragging her back left leg in the dirt as she was unloaded from the animal control truck. The leg is atrophied and wasted away to nearly no muscle tone. She cannot lift the leg, but instead drags it along. She has scraped off the tops of 2 toes by dragging the leg for so many months. An xray was done and showed that she had massive trauma to the leg some months back. The bones have been completely broken and one bone is jutting out at a 90-degree angle. There is nothing at this point that can be done to save her leg. She needs her leg amputated so she can freely move around. What is so upsetting about Lorraine's condition is that she must have been in incredible pain for weeks after the accident, and she obviously received no care. I hope we can raise the funds to care for her and send her to a wonderful rescue group that will place her in a forever loving home. I think this sweet girl really deserves that - if you can help us to make this happen for Lorraine please contribute at the chip in below

Beth

Update: Beth has not had her leg amputated and may not have to - the vet has wired the femur pieces and we are hoping that will work..

Beth is a 10 month old Jack Russell terrier mix who was brought to the shelter by Animal Control. When she arrived, Beth's back left leg was horribly swollen, and she held the leg at a funny angle while she hopped around the kennel on 3 legs. Beth went to the vet, where an x-ray revealed that her femur is broken and shattered in spots. She needs surgery to repair her broken femur. Please help us alleviate this wonderful little dog's pain and repair her leg by contributing to the chip-in below. Thank you!!

Please sponsor his heartworm treatment and vetting!

From Beth: The shelter staff (in charge of euthanasia) weren't even going to do intake on this dog; he was headed straight to death row.

When I met this dog, I was impressed by his gentle, friendly nature. He was happy to go for a walk, and he stood patiently while a staff member and I picked many ticks out of his ears. This poor boy, who has scars on his body, deserves a little TLC. We don't think he's a pit bull. He looks more like a mastiff mix, but he's only 62 lb. He stood patiently again when we vaccinated him and drew blood for his HW test the next day. I know he's an underdog, but sometimes I just want to give those dogs a chance. Can someone please give this dog an opportunity to know love?? He's approximately 4 years old. Heartworm positive

Monty

Rescued and recovered from extreme abuse/neglect. Please can you take him into you rescue so he can start looking for his forever home? His brother Nate has long since been rescued. While he is in foster care now, DCHS needs to to make room for another dog who needs the extra care!

Milk bone prize to the first person who knows what my name stands for.....Time's up!!! The answer is...please take a seat because it's a big...black dog. What!! A let down you say??? Well, shoot!! I have to live with it. In an effort to make me feel better about my name, my walker friend today said it stood for "Big Dog," as in I was being a big dog!! Smile. Smile. While I have been bold and friendly in my kennel, outside of my kennel, my tail was more comfortable tightly tucked and my body very close to the ground. Today was a good day for me. I walked like a Big Dog with another dog. My tail wagged and I smiled a lot!! As petite and cute as I am, I am hoping my new pics will draw the right person to me and me to them.

Jazzy

Please sponsor her vetting!

UPDATE:

Jazzy was all wiggle, jiggle this morning in her kennel. Normally, Jazzy is hunkered down on her Kuranda bed so to see her looking so happy and waggy-tailed was refreshing. Jazzy tenatively headed out for a walk on a leash and wound up holding her head high and proud as we proceeded on our journey. She pleasantly interacted with another dog on the walk and even cracked a smile! She has come a long way since she arrived weeks ago and is on the fast track to being the perfect pet!

Jazzy is a sweet girl with "high pet potential." Shy but very gentle, the shelter life does not agree with this black beauty. Jazzy is totally ok having you tote her around the shelter to areas less chaotic so you can spend time together. She is very accepting of other dogs and in fact is spending her time with Fendie, another very shy girl.

  Eleonore

She was to be spayed today but fate had other plans, She went into labor on her way to the s/n clinic this morning! She's had 3 puppies, and she is still in labor.   We need to find a foster home or rescue for her ASAP. If she goes back to the shelter, her puppies will die.

UPDATE: Eleanor and her seven newborns have found a foster home, but still need a rescue!

I just couldn't wait to be a mom! By now, you have surely heard that news that within a day of my glamour shots ( I do look great, don't I), I started popping out my little ones. At last count I was up to three. My next big hurdle is to find a safe home for me to raise my tiny wee ones. At the shelter they have no chance at survival and losing them will break my heart. What you may not know about me is that I am a lower energy, gentle, very friendly lady who you can't help but love! I am a care free girl who wakes up with a huge smile on my face. Give me something to REALLY smile about in adopting or rescuing me today! Act soon!! My babies are counting on you! June 29.

Sam

Sam is a precious 5-6wk old male who was dropped off at a storage locker while another tenant loaded items into their locker. Sam is friendly and very cuddly and with his dachshund mix will likely not grow to be very large. He is tipping the scales at 3lbs now and up to date on his first round of shots.

Sissy

Sissy is a tiny little love bug! Believed to be 4-6 wks old, Sissy was dropped off under a carport in Darlington. She is believed to be the sibling of Sam who we think is a dachsi mix. She had her first shots & wormer on Friday, July 23. Sissy is a very tiny 2.5 pounds and will be ready to travel in 2 weeks so get her while you can!!

Mellie

She was a sad little bag of bones with dirty, flea-infested skin and mattered eyes. She was too shy to come to my neighbor or me. We set out bowls of food and water twice a day, which she would come and empty after we left. Over a week after we started feeding her, my neighbors toddler granddaughter just walked over to Mellie and petted her. My neighbor then put out a dog house and Mellie began staying in it, though she still did not want to come to me. My neighbor and her granddaughter walked Mellie back to my house and coaxed her inside my fence. She has been here getting lots of TLC for almost 16 months now.
Mellie has LOTS of energy and loves nothing more than a good wrestling match. She is very strong and usually wins. But, win or lose, she is a good sport. Her most salient characteristic is her smile. She literally grins at everyone. She loves all people and any dog that will roughhouse with her. She will not tolerate wimpy, squeaky dogs, though. She has played with labs, boxers, and several mixed breed dogs males and females - in the time she has been with me. I believe she would be best suited in a home with another high energy dog her size or larger, and children ten years or older.
Although HW low positive, she has been on Ivermectin for 12 months; another six months should clear her of HW.
Mellie is a gorgeous caramel colored bully girl - She was found starving, with every bone protruding, when she was 5-6 months old in a drainage ditch. A kind soul picked her up and brought her back to health. She has proven herself to be fantastic with people and other doggies.

Spayed, shots UTD, 14-16 months old, HW-low positive, 30 lb.

Please read this article written by a vet. Especially read the section about alternative treatment!   It gives a comprehensive  summary of current treatment options for HEARTWORM infection, and finally it states that heartworms live for about TWO YEARS - not 5-6 or forever as many tell us. And  why should a worm live for 5 years???  I would want to know their secret to longevity!
A young dog  who does not yet have a huge load of adult heartworms (like the dissected heart you sometimes see in veterinary waiting rooms), can safely be treated with Ivermectin (such as  HeartGuard Rx) or or Ivomec. No new generations of heartworms (larvae), and the adult heartworms die of old age in 1-2 years depending on how old they are at the start of the Ivermectin treatment.

Please also refer to this book: Old Country Vet ****    Heartworm Treatment

You may have seen pictures of a canine heart suffocated by a mass of heartworms. This finding represent a late and truly "End Stage" of this disease. A dog who has lived enough years with heart worm infection to present with this finding at autopsy cannot be safely treated by any means.  Dogs who appears perfectly healthy but test positive for the presence of heartworms are years away from this end stage condition. The heartworm test used by the DCHS gives an estimate of the number of adult worms, strongly positive might be 8-10 adults - estimated.
Iimmiticide is in itself a danger to the dog, because all heartworms are killed at the same time. A number of dead worms may float into the blood supply of the dog's lungs and cause sudden distress and even death as a consequence of an embolism of dead worms. While no statistics are available to non veterinarians about the prevalence of such an adverse or deadly effect of Immiticide injection, many long time rescuers are acutely aware of  it.

Frosty

In Frosty's own words: I hear black is always in vogue but what about the pure, clean look of elegant white?? In my world, white rules and I should know as I have staff coming by to visit with me and always I hear the words, "what a great white jacket of fur." Outside of my stunning looks, I am a huge love bug and wiggled all over my plush carpet as the photo gal captured me at my best. Frosty has been vaccinated, fixed/spayed and feluk/fiv tested. and is "free" to rescues.

Sylvester

Sylvester is a big, big kitty with a heart of gold. Good with other cats, Sylvester loves hanging out in oversized kushy donut beds at the shelter and taking in all the activity in the habitat he shares with other homeless cats.
He is fully sponsored and available to rescues without pull fees.
